Coming very soon to your mailbox, the July 2015 Reel News, a 48-page issue packed with articles, essays, auction reports and coverage – in words and photos – of the ORCA National in Dania Beach, Fla.

Todd Larson penned the definitive piece on A. G. Spalding reels, profiling the man who had a huge impact on basketball, baseball and, yes, fishing, in America.

Ben Wright takes us into the strange world of the English Illingworth spinning reels, while Mike Cacioppo continues his history of Ocean City reels, part III.

Paul Manuel goes deep into the methods for determining what a reel grasp is made from (see the photos that go with his article, shown in color on the Show & Tell page of the ORCA website). An article you will definitely not see anywhere else goes back in time to when Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro “borrowed” a Zebco 33 and rod, and learned how to catch bass the easy way.

Bob Miller reflects back to the days past, with River Reflections, Ben Wright gets us up to date with his Spinning Reel Report, and Wayne Benson – who runs ORCA’s online fund-raising auctions and manages the Sambla online lending program – writes about how these work.

The issue also includes a report on what appears to be a new world-record auction price for a fishing reel (hint: it’s British), and new ORCA President Betty Barr’s inaugural “President’s Message.”

ORCA’s 25th Anniversary – That’s a Lot of Reels!

Waxing nostalgic, ORCA Founder, Mike Nogay, and several charter members recalled some of the early days of this great organization and its formation on November 1, 1990.

From Ed Pritchard:

“I still remember the “on the spot founding” of ORCA at the tackle meet on East Broad St. and Hamilton Rd. in Columbus Ohio. Some of us ponied up our dues to Mike right there and then. One of the best investments I ever made.

Happy Birthday ORCA!!”

From Mike Nogay:

“Ed’s post really brought back some great memories so I went and dug out the first 4 issues of the ORCA Newsletter. Dues were $10 a year, and members signed up at tackle shows throughout 1990.

The first issue of the newsletter was dated January 1991 and highlighted the November 10, 1990 FATC Ft. Myers meet. Two EVH reels from Bruce Wilson’s collection were pictured on the front page.

Chuck Horton II donated envelopes and stationary to the new start-up club. Steve Vernon wrote an article in the first issue about the Nov. 1990 Allentown, PA show, and I did a date and maker chart on Kentucky reels, with “special thanks to Ron Gast and Frank Stewart.”

The 35 charter members were listed in the first ORCA newsletter in alphabetical order and the next 159 appeared in issues #2-4 as sign ups for charter members continued throughout 1991:

ORCA’s 25th Anniversary, The History of the Fishing Reel:…

Hey ORCAns! It’s our 25th Anniversary, and what better way to celebrate this milestone than by buying the Limited Edition The History of the Fishing Reel: The Best of the Reel News, 1991-2015 book! 398 pages of Fishing Reel goodness that serves to chronicle the history of the fishing reel, the history of The Reel News, and the history of ORCA all in one incredible book! Contains approximately 150 articles written by ORCA members and published in The Reel News. It is dvided into eleven sections covering everything from baitcasting, spinning, fly, saltwater, and spincast reels to primary documents, reel history, and miscellaneous information. It also has a comprehensive index of all articles ever published in The ORCA Newsletter and the Reel News (thanks to Steve Vernon and Roger Schulz!) We tried to include one article from everyone who has ever contributed a research article to ORCA.

Taken as a whole, this book represents a graduate course in fishing reel history, as well as a must have for any serious collector or dealer of vintage fishing tackle. The book is edited and annotated by Todd E.A. Larson, and has appreciations by founder Michael Nogay and current ORCA president John H. Elder.

This image is the softcover; the hardcover has high quality moroccan grain with gold foil stamping. Here is the die stamp (will look so much better than this).

Please help ORCA welcome our newest Honorary Member, Vernon H. Kirby, Jr.! Mr. Kirby joins a distinguished list of ORCA members and non-members deemed to have made a major contribution in the field of fishing reel collecting or the history pertaining thereto. Congratulations!

Vernon H. Kirby, Jr. Vern is a polymath of fishing history and tackle. His in-depth research over decades has provided many authors, collectors, and fishing museums with essential information that might have remained undiscovered, if not for his efforts. Although he has published only occasionally, Vern is the “unsung hero” behind dozens of books and articles penned by some of our most respected writers on angling. He lives in Salisbury, Maryland.
